Q: Is it true that I can use Baking Soda (Bicarbonate of Soda) for Cleaning?
A: Yes. Baking soda on a damp sponge or cloth can remove stubborn grease & stains from most surfaces, including hobs & ovens.
A: It can also be used to remove unwanted odours from carpets. Just sprinkle a small amount on the offending area in the evening, leave overnight then vacuum the following morning.
A: The best cleaning tip for baking soda is probably for its use on sinks, baths & toilets - especially as very little, if any, scrubbing is required.
A: Baking soda can be used to clean stains inside fridges & freezers too. It leaves surfaces looking great and smelling lovely - without scratching.
A: Waste pipes & drains can be cleaned using a combination of baking soda and Vinegar. Some of you may recall this cleaning tip from your school chemistry lessons. Combine about one quarter of a cup of baking soda with about one cup of vinegar, poor this down the drain or waste pipe. Next pour some hot water down the pipe or drain and repeat as and when required.

Q: Is it true that Alka-Seltzer can be used as a cleaning aid?
A: Yes. Just like baking soda, alka-seltzer can also be used in combination with vinegar to clean drains and pipes. About 4 tablets should do the trick.
A: About 4-5 tablets dropped into the toilet pan should leave it beautifully clean if left for an hour or two. Stubborn stains may require a little help with a brush.
A: Dirty glasses can be brightened up with a couple of alka-seltzer tablets. Simply top up with warm water and leave for an hour.

Q: How can I clean my TV screen?
A: Use a used dryer sheet to remove static and dust from your television screen. It also helps to reduce the dust settling again.
A: Use a damp cloth to clean a TV screen that has been soaked in a solution of warm water and a half-a-cap of clothes conditioner. After applying, use a clean, dry cloth to buff clean.

Q: How do I clean ceramic floor tiles?
A: Ceramic floor tiles just need to be swept and mopped on a regular basis. For stubborn marks add a small amount of liquid soap. Change the water frequently and keep in mind that too much soap or dirty water will make the floor dull and perhaps sticky. Using scrubbing pads on ceramic tile floors may scratch them and are therefore not recommended.

Q: How do I clean grout?
A: Old grout may need to be cleaned with a wax stripper or heavy-duty cleaner and a strong grout brush. Tough spots may require a bleach cleaner but remember to wash the grout thoroughly. Once it’s clean and dry apply a coat of masonry sealer so that it won’t absorb dirt in the future. Mildew in showers can be cleaned with a 1 to 5 solution of chlorine bleach and water. When using bleach ensure you don’t have any ammonia based products in the area and always make sure the area is well ventilated.

Q: How do I clean hard water marks and deposits?
A: Hard water deposits are alkaline based which means that the best solution is to use an acid cleaner. Lime scale removers contain a low level of acid that ensures a highly effective clean. The low level of acid is safe on most household surfaces, just ensure you rinse each surface thoroughly.

Q: How do I remove pet hair from upholstery and carpets?
A: One option is to use a nylon brush, using light even strokes to remove the hair. Another option is to use cellotape wrapped around your hand.

Q: How do I remove pet stains from a carpet?
A: The first thing to do is to blot up any liquid using towels or other absorbent materials. Start with gentle pressure and keep increasing it until the moisture is fully removed.

Q: How do I clean wood flooring?
A: Wood floors should be vacuumed and dust mopped regularly to maintain them. This will stop dirt and dust from building up and potentially damaging the floor. You should never get wood floors too wet or let them dry naturally.

Q: How do I clean my computer screen and television?
A: Static electricity can cause quite a build-up of dust on a screen. Power should be turned off before cleaning. Then with a cleaning cloth or paper towel and glass cleaner, gently wipe the screen. A spray bottle must never be used on either of these devises as the residue could settle inside through the ventilation slots. Always consult the owner’s manual before cleaning any screen.
